Cor Schaap
Cor Schaap (1968) grew up in a fishing family in Katwijk aan Zee, where the sea and the beach became a lasting source of inspiration from an early age. Since then, the Dutch coast has been the central theme in his paintings, in which suggestion, color, light, and atmosphere come together in a personal and contemporary way.
From 2026, Schaap presents a new series of large-format paintings in which his visual language has further developed. His recent oeuvre aligns with Post-Impressionism and also shows influences of modern Luminism, in which light and atmosphere play the leading role. His paintings are characterized by a bright, sunny appearance, a free brushwork, and a subtle palette of sand tones, aquas, and soft pastels.
The focus is not on the faithful representation of color and form, but on the personal experience of the painting. Reality is not copied, but reinterpreted based on the artist's impression. Forms and figures remain deliberately sketchy and suggestive. This creates space for the viewer's imagination, who not only looks at the painting but also experiences it. It is precisely this balance between recognition and abstraction that gives the work its own distinctive character.
Cor Schaap works both en plein air and from his studio by the sea. Through his own visual language, he continues to renew the Dutch coast, where not visible reality, but the atmosphere, the light, and the emotional experience of the moment are the guiding principles. His paintings are part of the collection of Galerie Gabriëls in The Hague, among others, a renowned gallery within the Dutch art world for over 50 years.
